Just received the news that my photo called Bridge to Azaleas was selected to be printed in both the 2014 and 2015 calendars from Magnolia Plantation. I am told it will be featured in Charleston Postcard Company’s 35th Edition 2014 Charleston, SC engagement calendar and in their 2015 Charleston, SC desk calendar in the month of March each year.
Looking back to the events that led up to the taking of this photo: I was part of a group led by Donna Eaton called: “Lowcountry for Ladies Photography Workshop.” The workshop was four-day trip in and around Charleston, SC in early April of 2011. The trip included an early morning excursion to Magnolia Gardens, which included a sunrise photo opportunity and a photo walk in their zoo. Other excursions on the same workshop included a photo trek through Charleston, sunset photography of a local bridge and other areas in and around Charleston, SC.
For me personally, that trip marked a turning point. I was moving from a basic SLR camera to a full-frame SLR and I was making a commitment to improve my photographic skills. I had been bitten by the photography “bug” and everything I did or thought about was to photograph.
When you find yourself with a group of people who have a similar interest, it can’t help but improve your photographs. Donna Eaton, the leader, scouted the Charleston area beforehand for sites that would provide us with the best photographs. She gave us plenty of time to make sure we could get the photographs we wanted. Donna is a pro with a wealth of knowledge about photography and she shoots NIKON!!! Yaaaay! Perfect for me.
For the Bridge to Azalea photograph, I used a Nikon D700 camera with a 24-70mm lens set at 60mm, 0.4s at f/22. Tripod was a Manfrotto with a Really Right Stuff Ballhead.
The friendships formed on that trip have lasted over the years. Each one of us has improved our skills. I am looking forward to joining Donna Eaton and Kathleen Clemons on the “Charleston in Bloom” Photography Tour in March of this year (2013). Kathleen Clemons is a Lensbaby Guru and I am looking forward to capturing some good Lensbaby shots.
My Photo, Bridge to Azaleas was entered in Magnolia Plantation’s 2011 photo contest. I would highly recommend signing up for a similar Photography Tour in March or April either to Charleston or to any other site with magnificent gardens because spring is the time to photograph brilliant flowers and, it is a great opportunity to join with other photographers and share the enthusiasm. Your photography skills will improve, I guarantee it.
